TV soaps have become nothing more than a means of killing time before you step out for a night out.

Or a nice way to lull yourself to sleep at night! Unlike the English soaps, after you take a longish break from a desi serial and return to watch it, you realise nothing has changed.

In Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Akshara’s woes with her in-laws continue. Due to a series of misunderstandings, Akshara and Naitik are estranged from their parents. So, they decide to spend Holi away from home.

What’s the big deal you ask? But no, you see, this is a traditional joint family and it is considered blasphemous for a young married couple to go on a holiday during Holi, so what if they are estranged from their parents. So, there is major sulking all around — bhabhiji and her choti dulhan (Akshara’s mom-in-law) have mastered the art of exchanging panic-stricken glances every few minutes like two mentally deranged women.

Dadaji (the head of the family) is such a stubborn man, who you wish would take up sanyas and retire in the Himalayas. Apparently, this actor did take a break from the serial but returned soon enough. Such a pity, I’m sure his family had many peaceful, happy moments in his life.

There really is so much you can tolerate in a serial, so you move to Tere Liye and you figure that the dreariness continues here too. This is a Bengali family, where the younger son, Robindo, is in love with his bhabhi, Taani’s sister-in-law, Mauli. He was almost engaged to her but she dumped him for the less affluent Taposh.

Bas, time to take revenge; he plots along with his evil brother-in-law, to set his newly acquired gas agency on fire. So, predictably, there is major rona-dhona and a great deal of melodrama.

Taposh is taken away to the police station for questioning and his wife Mauli dramatically faints but not before her mother accuses Taposh of being good for nothing and laments the fact that the daughter choose to marry him. Hey Ram, nothing changes in this world of melodramatic soaps.

One hour of watching these two mindless serials back-to-back is enough to either give you a splitting headache or numb your senses enough to lull you into deep slumber.

Apart from this track, there will be another major twist in the life of the protagonist, Akshara. The source said that Akshara will face a tough time because Sneha’s mother will call up Singhania family to talk to ‘Daddaji’ while the family is celebrating Naitik’s mother’s birthday. Akshara disconnects the phone, saying it is a wrong number as she did not want to spoil the mood of the family. But, Sneha’s mom, Sharda is adamant on meeting Daddaji and finally gets to talk to him.

Sharda lands in Naitik’s house and reveals all about Sneha and Naitik.

A source told TellyCafe.com, “Karan Mehra of ‘Behenein’ gets calls from fans thinking that he is Naitik of Yeh Rishta… as even his name is Karan Mehra. But as soon as they come to know that he is not Naitik, they cut the phone saying ‘wrong number’ as Karan Mehra of ‘Behenein’ is not that popular a figure, though he had entered the industry before Naitik.”

Well, we had to know Karan’s… err… Behenein’s Karan’s… opinion on this… and he laughed, “Yes, I do get calls from various production houses and fans thinking that I am Naitik of Yeh Rishta… But they hang up on me as soon as they come to know that I am a different Karan Mehra…. I think I should start talking with them. Not the production people, but at least with the fans so that they will get the satisfaction of talking to Naitik. (laughs) What do you think?”

Well, if Behenein ever catapults you to the top of the fame pyramid, perhaps Karan can return the favour if fans call him thinking he’s you…

Sneha has decided to pour her heart out before Naitik unaware of the fact that latter is married. But no sooner does she enters Naitik’s cabin that she comes across an envelope addressing Mrs. and Mr. Singhania. She gets perturbed but eventually involves her self in office work. It will be interesting to watch whether she will encounter the reality tonight and what has her mother in store for her when latter orders her to stay at home the next day.

September 9, 2010: Recently, CINTAA (Cine and TV stars Association) has passed a rule for not exceeding more than 12 hours of working for any unit member, that also includes actors of the television shows and Bollywood films. And the change is noticed in most of the daily soap actors as they are feeling good for not working more than 12 hours per day.

We contacted a few of them to know about their stance and they felt quite relaxed after listening to the rule passed. “Now I will get time to socialize and spend some quality time with my parents. I won’t need any separate holidays for taking rest because after shooting I will be back home to rest,” says Hina Khan, fondly known as Akshara of ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’.

We also contacted Barun Sobti a.k.a Shravan of ‘Baat Hamari Pakki Hai’ who was heard recently working for 32 hours continuously and he was also sounding fairly happy after the implementation of this rule passed. But on other hand, the actor said the million dollar words. “I am happy to hear that there would be no more extra work loads on actors and other unit members. The rules are also implemented with our show but the talks of the producers are still going on with the CINTAA people to make some amendments. Because sometimes it become necessary to work for more than 12 hours a day. After all, at least for actors the profession is by choice and not by chance,” explains Barun.

Barun further says, “But anyone would like to spend time with family, so that would be a treat for us if this rule continues.”

Hope this rule brings happiness not only for actors, but also for the unit members, who are never seen onscreen but have a lion’s share in the final product.

Roza (Holy fasting from dawn to sunset) is a crucial part of the holy month of Ramadan, when all Muslims fast and offer prayers to their almighty. Eid, the big celebration which marks the end of the fasts, is now just around the corner with about 3 more days to go. Normally, everyone is busy shopping and preparing for Eid during this time, but our girl Hina Khan, aka Akshara of ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata hai’ is not happy. The reason being? Hina couldn’t fast for the Holy Month due to her health and hectic work schedules!

“I am really feeling very bad as I could not fast for the month of Ramadan. It’s not because I didn’t want to… but I can’t as my working schedule is so erratic. As you know, during Roza we have to get up early in the morning at 4:00 a.m for prayers. Normally, people get up at 4:00 and again go to bed after prayers and catch up on their sleep. But that’s not an option for me as I have to be on the sets early and then go through an entire day’s shift and then it’s just not practical.” explains Hina.

She rues the fact that she has to be on her feet the whole day and must eat to keep up her energy and for that reason she can’t keep her fasts along with her family, but is at least looking forward to having a special feast with her family on Eid.

We wondered if she had time to do her shopping yet and she excitedly said, “No, not yet. I’ve had no time yet but I’ll surely make some time in the coming two days!”

September 3, 2010: The latest buzz is that very soon Mohit will become the rescuer of his wife Nandini. He would rescue her from the clutches of his greedy mother Rukmini.

Mohit was contacted and he says that if such a thing takes place, then he would be completely devastated and thanks to his mother’s greed, the whole family would suffer.

It would further be revealed that Mohit would come to know about his mother’s extreme lust for money and eventually, she would start tormenting Nandini. He would try to resolve these issues, but in case of a failure, the two would be forced to leave the house.

It will be seen that if Naitik would support Mohit and his elder sister, Nandini in this decision. Mohit also reveals, that Naitik will support Nandini, however the family’s unity might be lost according to Dadaji.

Rukmini, Mohit’s mother, who said that the only reason, she approved of the marriage was because Nandini came from an affluent family; however she never got any dowry and thus she expects her son to support his mother.
